1949

THE GAZETTE'S completion of the twentfifth year of its existence synchronises with the retirement of its foundation-editor (1924-1949) Shri Amal Home one of the stalwarts of the "New Corporation" upon whom rested the charge of carrying its mesage —the message of the "City Beautiful" —to the citizens of Calcutta. [...] The Calcutta Municipal Gazette has been serving the people of Calcutta and Bengal for the last 25 years by keeping them duly informed of the affairs of the Corporation in which the citizens of Calcutta are vitally interested and also by discussing municipal problems of general interest to the people of India. [...] The Calcutta Municipal Corporation is the premier Corporation of India and I hope the Calcutta Municipal Gazette will endeavour to educate the people and the officials of the Municipality to see that the Municipal affairs of Calcutta are conducted in a manner that will redound to the credit of the whole country. [...] Its birth coincided with the advent of the New Era in the civic life of Calcutta when Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das became the first Mayor of the City and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose the first Chief Executive Officer of the Cjty's municipal administration and Shri Amal Home the foundation-editor of the Gazette. [...] As the organ of the Corporation of Calcutta it was devoted to the service of the City by educating the general public and arousing the civic sense of the residents.
