—In exercise of the power conferred by section 2 of the Kazis Act 1880 (Act XII of 1880) the Governor is pleased to appoint Janab Syed Abdul Jalil temporarily to be the Kazi for the celebrtion of marriages and the performance of other rites and ceremonies within the police-stations of Dum Dum Rajarhat and Bhangore in the district of the 24-Parganas until further orders. [...] Subsequent to this there were several conferences and correpondence over the demands of the Workers' Union and on failure of the authorities to implement the demands on the plea of financial inability beyond what had been recommended by the Mill Owners' Association for the minimum total earnings of unskilled labour the Workers' Union served a notice of strike on the authorities on the 27th M [...] The evidence is that the Company incurred heavy loss on account of the long-drawn strike of the workers of the mill and the evidence is that as a result of this strike the management had an ovedraft of Rs. [...] In reply the Secretary of the Basanti Cotton Mills wrote to the Labour Comissioner that the demands were excessive and that the existing rates of wages and allowances were in a line with the total earnings of the worers in the neighbouring Cotton Mills. [...] In the meantime there were some negtiations between the management and the workers at the intervention of the Bengal Provincial Trade Union Congress in the house of the Subdivisional Officer Barrackpore but there was no settlement inasmuch as the management pleaded inability to bear any additional burden which implementtion of the demands of the Workers' Union ivolved.
