The Cochin Government has always readily assumed its share in works common to the State and to British territory such as the protective works at Cruz Milagre (where an opening of the breakwater into the sea threatened by diminishing the scour over the Cochin bar to impair the value of the harbour) and the improvement of the West Coast Canal for a length of 3o miles where it forms the boundary of [...] Again when a cart-road was projected to connect Ponani with the southern end of the Shoran& bridge and thus with the railway without the necessity of fording the river the Cochin Government readily undertook the cost of the lencrth lying within the State. [...] Bounded on the north and north-west by the State of Mysore; on the east by Salem and Trichinopoli Districts the Kaveri (Cauvery) river marking the boundary up to the line of railway on the west by the Nilgiris Malabiir District and the State of Cochin ; and on the south by the District of Madura and the State of Travancore. [...] The eastern portion of Coimbatore passed nominally into the hands of the Madura Ndiks in the 16th century ; and in the i 7th century commenced the series of Myqore incursions which terminated in the 18th century in the incorporation of the District with Mysore. [...] The treaty of 1792 signed soon afterwards ceded Coimbatore and the greater portion of the District to the English ; and in 1799 on the capture of Seringapatam and death of Tipti the whole passed under the direct administration of the East India Company.
