The control of the Agency by the Government of Bengal dates from the separation of the North-Western Provinces in 1835 when it was decided that the managmnent of the dpartment should remain with the Board of Customs a body subordinate to the Local Government of the -Lower Provinces. [...] The factory comprises eight distinct enclosures including the Superintendent's house on the bank of the river a new houseALTERATIONS AND ADDITIONS 13 for the Factory Engineer and one Assistant and the new office for the Opium Agent in the north-west corner the guard lines on the north built on either side of the road leading into the city and the large compound between the west wall of the ma [...] A new power house built in 1929 supplies the energy for some of the machinery in the workshop and in the laboratory for lights and fans in the various offices and for the electric lamps by means of which the outer perimeter of the factory is illuminated at night. [...] The extension of the excise operations in the factory has brought about the increase in the number of buildings and the enlargement of the yard for excise work referred to above. [...] In the year 1918 the local Government addressed the Comissioners of the Divisions on the subject of the introduction of provident funds rules to all classes of its servants thereby depriving the benefit of pension to the clerical staff of the board who were enjoying it till then.
