One of these was across the main river a short distance below the site of the temporary dams and the other across the head of the Chill a Channel to divert its supply down to the lower weir. [...] On the right flank of the undersluices and at right angles to the line of the weir is the regulator as since modified owing to the wishes of the Hindu community the head bridge which consists of i;en spans of 20 feet each. [...] The regulator was the first of the masonry works to be taken in hand the first concrete in foundations being laid towards the end of the working season of 1913-14. [...] The increase in the mean density in spite of the decrease in the total population is due to the fact that the total area of the district in 1921 was 1 168 688 acres or 1 826 square miles. [...] The most remarkable feature of the period 1916-21 was the great epidemic of influenza in 1918 in consequence of which the deaths from fevers rose to 74 685 about hair of which may be attributed to this disease The highest incidence of cholera was in 1921 the year of the Adhkumbhi fair in Hardwar ; in this district most of the cholera is traceable to infection brought by pilgrims.
