5 The considerable increase in wages of the labouring classes of the district is partly due to the prevalence of high prices generally and partly to social and political inspirations. [...] The area under the plough naturally spreads with the rise in the price of grain and the breaking up of inferior areas becomes remunerative. [...] The Jats and the Rajputs produced the largest number of combatants and the Chamars and sweepers scored the highest as non-combatants. [...] The District obtained the third place in the matter of recruitment as well as in the War Loan in the Meerut division but if the population was taken into consideration it was the first in the same.14 Muzaffarnagar District. [...] The Gujars of the district also provided their quota in the matter of recruitment but the other fighting classes of the ditrict greatly missed the golden opportunity.
