But the commencement of the Great War and the cosequent stoppage of the import of synthetic indigo increased the cultivation again as the following figures show:— Acres. [...] Of the thre3 municipalities in the district Bulandshahr was the least affected by the unhealthy conditions of the decade and being the headquarters of the district gained much by immigrtion. [...] The improvidence of the former led to a great dimintion of the main portion of the estate which has been under the management of the Court of Wards since 5-8-1910. [...] The cumulative effect of the heavy enhancement of duty of the economic depression of the unfavourable agricultural seasons and of the non-coperation movement under the garb of temperance activities was that the consumption suddenly fell to 4 056 L. P. gallons in 1921.22. [...] In 1924 the district celebrated the centenary of its separate existence His Excellency Sir William Maths Governor of the United Provinces opened the new Law Courts and the Prince of Wales' Hospital and laid the foundation stone of the Roberts Reading Room an institution destined for the use of retired Indian Military officers of whom the district contains a large number.
