Gazetteer of the Darbhanga District

1906

The centre of this enlightened kingdom of Videha was apparently in Tirhut ; the capital was Mithila which is probably identifiable with that of Janakpur a town a short distance to the uorth-west of the district iu Nepal territory the name of which preserves the memory of the scholar-king who made it his capital ; and tradition points to the village of Phulhar the north-east corner of the Benipa [...] the presence of seals of mercantile and banking guilds lends some plausibility to the suggestion that something like a Chamber of Commerce had been established even at that early date in Upper India ; while the titles of the chiefs or governors such as the commander of the military forces the head of the police the chief chamberlain the chief of the war-office treasury the governor of the city [...] lIdjipur situated at the confluence of the Gandak with the Ganges was a position of great itrategical importance ; it N. s long the head-quarters of the Governors of the Be-ngal kings and was the scene 'of more than one rebellion ; and the result is that the Musalman rule has left many more traces in the south than in the north of Tirhut. [...] the language of Mithila or the country AGE.* bounded on the north by the Hinialayi 6 on the south by the Ganges on the west by the Gandak and on the east by the river Kosi. [...] The river Gandak proved in the days of the Mulimmnadan invasion a curiously strong barrier ; and while the countries to the west of the Gandak and 6outh of the Ganges we-e constantly subjected to the turbulent influences that accompanied the rule of the Mughal dynasty the country of Mithila the modern Tirhut remained more or less at peace under Hindu kings.
