The portion of the verdict of Sir Cyril Radcliffe dated August 12 1947 which concerns the definition of the boundary of the district is reproduced below: From the point on the riVer Ganges where the channel of the river Mathabhanga takes off the line shall run along that channel to the northernmost point where it meets the boundary between the thanas of Daulatpur and Karimpur. [...] The Bagge Award issued early in 1950 on the definition of the above sentence of Sir Cyril Radcliffe was worded as follows: The boundary between India and Pakistan shall run along the middle line of the main channel of the river Mathabhanga which takes off from the river Ganges in or close to the north-western corner of the district of Nadia at a point wessouth-vvest of the police-station and [...] The point of the ofE-take of the river Mathabhanga shall be connected by a straight and shortest line with a point in the midstream of the main channel of the river Gange^ the said latter point being ascertained as on the date of the award or if not possible as on the date of the demarcation of the boundary line in Dispute I. The said point so ascerflRned* shall be the south-easternmost point of [...] Thomas Oldham recorded in the proceedings of the Asiatic Society of Bengal 1870 page 47 may be quoted: I suppose no one will hesitate to acknowledge that the whole of the country including the Sundarban proper lying between the Hooghly on the west and the Meghna on the east is only the delta caused by the deposition of the debris carried down by the rivers Ganges and Brahmaputra and their [...] It is also certain that in this peculiar delta the general course of the main waters of the Ganges has gradually tracked from the west towards the east until of late years the larger body of the waters of the Ganges have united with those of the Brahmaputra and have together proceeded to the sea as the Meghna.
