Boundaries and configuration The boundaries of the district are the district of Budwan on the north the river Hooghly on the east the district of Howrah on the south and the districts of Midnapur Bankura and Burdwan on the west. [...] These marshy depressions are especially numerous in the Serampur sudivision being found between the Hooghly and the Saraswati (the Dankuni marsh) between the Saraswati and the Kausiki between the Kausiki and Kana Damodar and between the Kana Damodar and the main channel ot the Damodar. [...] Among them may fee mentioned the Behula the Kana Nadi the Kunti Nadi (also called the Magra I^halVr Kana Nadi) the Sarasw^ti the Kausiki the Kantul with the Gopalnagar the Ghia witAthe Julka the Kana Damodar the Madaria the Betia or Sankhibhanga the Mundeswari thelKana Dwarakeswar the Sankra the Jhumjhumi the Amodiir and the Tarajuli. [...] the Khanyan Marsh between the old silted up channels of the Damodar in thana Pandua the marsh between the Ghia and the Kana Nadi the Dankuni marsh between the Hooghly and the Saraswati which is now drained by the Dankuni drainage channel and the marsh between the Damodar Khal and the Kana Dwarakeswar in thana Khanakul. [...] For the Christian the district was the home of many missions the Augustinian friars and the Jesuits who came in the 16th century the Capuchins who came to Chandernagore in 1705 the Serampur Mission of Baptists who came in 1792 the Church of England and the Free Church of Scotland Mission.
