Government of Bihar District Census Handbook: Gaya

1952

On the whole the dist t is well-served by railways for besides the Grand Chord line which serves the sout east part of the district there are the Patna-Gaya and the Gaya-Kiul lines and the altonganj branch. [...] This shows that Gaya was an independent district in the 6th-7th centuries A. D. At the time of Akbar the northern part of the district was included in the Sarkars (districts) of Patna and Behar cod the southern part in Kokrah."2 of this district and there is a good road connecting Gaya City with it. [...] famous places of pilgrimage in India and large numbers of Hindus from all pa s of the country visit Gaya to make 'offerings for the souls of their ancestors and the hole of the northern part of Gaya district may justly be regarded as the holy la of Budhism containing as it does not only Bodh Gaya but also a large number of ther places which are connected with the life and teaching of the Budha. [...] The foregoing analysis of the results of the 1951 Sample Survey and the 1951 census figures leave little scope for doubt that more than 50 per cont of the existing holdings are insufficient to provide the bare necessities of life to a family of 6 persons. [...] This table shows for the District and Sibdivisions the area the number of towns and villages the number of occupied houses and the total urban and rural population male and female.
