In fact it is surprising that his views should have come so near the truth notably in his recognition of the occurrence of the Fornocho3rus line in India and of the ancestry of the extraordinary genus Tow - couodon. and testifies to the wonderful acumen of the famous Swiss geologist. [...] In the allied family of the Anthracotheriidal the single-cusped condition of the lower premolars is found side by side with the double-cusped in the earliest known deposits in which the family occurs although the former type alone survived into the Middle Oligocene. [...] In both these main divisions lophodonty has occurred in one branch in the former in the genus Lophochcerus ; in the latter in the genus Ifistriodon Both divisions include one branch in which a scrofic lower male canine has precociously -developed in the former in the case of the line Conohyus to Tetraconodon ; in the latter in the case of the Propakeochoyrus to Hyotherium line. [...] It differs from these genera however and from all other genera except Tetraconodon and Sivachcerus by the enlargment of the last two premolars relative to the molars by the vertical wrinkles on the premolars by the hypsodonty of p4 and by the feebleness of the cleft in the outer cusp of the same tooth all trace of which is removed after a very small amount of wear. [...] While the width of the tooth at the base of the crown is appreciably greater than in C. chinjiensis and very considerably greater than in C. simorrensis the summits of the inner and outer cusps stand at approximately the same distance apart in the three species.
