It would be expected that the Lower Ranikot would be developed in the Samana range also and the Thal succession shows at least that a limestone facies similar to that of the Lockhart limestone exists locally a long way below the base of the Upper Ranikot."132 THE FOSSIL FAUNA OF THE SAMANA RANGE. [...] Now that it is known that the whole thickness of the Ranikot beds was deposited in Palaeocene times and that a hiatus of unknown extent occurs at the base of the Lower Ranikot above the Danian it is evident that the duration of the period in question is not to be underestmated. [...] Apparently however the foraminifera confirm the view first put forward by Zittel that in the Libyan Desert any gap that may occur between the highest beds of the Cretacous and the lowest beds of the Tertiary is very small so that the basal beds of the Libyan with Nummulites deserti etc. [...] If this is correct the Lower Libyan must be the equivalent of the Ranikot of Sind and the Upper Libyan of the Laki. [...] As already mentioned the Aquitanian Basin and the Pyrenees the most classical area in southern Europe for the study of strata transitional from the Cretaceous to the Eocene formed a gulf opening to the west in Palaeocene times.
