Memoirs Geological Survey of India: the Geology and Petrology of Eastern Singhbhum and Surrounding Areas

1942

The present memoir deals with the geology of the eastern part of the region, up to the edge of the coastal alluvium and laterite. [...] This more or less completes the geological description of this extensive tract, and as the present memoir is the last of the series, and it is unlikely that further descriptions of adjacent parts will appear for some years, at least not in the immediate future, the opportunity will be taken to summarise herein the extent of our knowledge of the whole tract to date. [...] The short tributa- ries south of the Subamarekha, which have their source in the hills, are rapidly cutting back through the ranges ; the capture by one of them of the larger Garra nadi may be the explanation of the steep gorge which the latter has cut through the ranges before joining the Subarnarekha. [...] The first indication of the occurrence of iron-ore in this region was the publication, in 1904, of the discovery of the Gorumahisani deposits by P. N. Bose (8, pp. [...] In this he gave a general outline of the Archean rocks in India, with special reference to Singhbhum, but the great value of this paper was the discussion, for the first time in India, of the metallogenesis of the Archean deposits from a modern angle, particularly of Singhbhum.
