Career Lectures. Introductory Address

It is in the fitness of things that the inaugural lecture should he deli- vered by Sir Praphullachandra Ray whom Bengal and India will remember with pride and affection not only as an eminent man of science and a founder of a school of chemical research but also as a pioneer industrialist. [...] That task is a gigantic one and can be successfully achieved by common action bold- ly taken by various authorities particularly by the State for it will involve the consideration of factors of far-reaching importance, both economic and political . We from the University have however to per- form our duty. [...] I would however, point out immediately that the list of subjects we have selected is by no means exhaustive and if the present scheme meets the success it deserves there will be no difficulty in our continuing it in future and in embracing within its scope other important sub- jects of practical utility. [...] We hope that by a wide circulation of these lectures, which will be published as soon as possible, the attention of all concerned and specially of the student-community will be at- tracted and these will help them in exploring the possibilities of finding useful careers in various branches of trade and commerce.
