Calcutta Disturbances Commission of Enquiry. Record of Proceedings (20th January to 31st January 1947) Minutes of Evidence

1947

You must have read the proceedings of that meeting on the 15th ?/ If it was on the 14th I certainly did on the 15th, but I do not remember the date. [...] Masud: So if the Hindu leaders and the Hindu editors will be publishing in their statements and in their editorials that the Muslims wanted to start direct action against the Hindus on the 16th, would you not consider it to be a mis-statement of fact ? /I always understood that Direct Action meant that it was the day on which it would be explained to the Muslims what direct action meant. [...] Masud: If that particular fact is mentioned in the chrono- logical list of incidents that have been put in by the Government, would you con- sider that the very fact that Muslim girls were parading the streets on the 16th would $how that a peaceful intention was the object of the Muslim League authori- ties in observing the Direct Action Day ?/Yes, I would agree with that. [...] We have put in that in the month of September and for the period from the 16th of August to the end of the year we have also put that in. [...] And even the number of telephones which are in the names of the Moslems is much less than the number of telephones held by the Hindus, I mean in Calcuta?/ I would expect that.
