Now then, with regard to this fire at Belliagatta, from your evidence it appears that between the afternoon of the 16th and the 17th afternoon you did not go across the bridge to the east side of the Canal. [...] But according to your own evidence—you can modify it if you remem- ber it otherwise--according to your own evidence, between the afternoon of the 16th and the afternoon of the 17th you did not visit Narkeldanga Main Road ?/ On the morning of the 17th I had been to Narkeldanga Main Road and I saw dead bodies there. [...] Now, between the 16th and 17th of August and November 1946, do you know or not whether witnesses were examined in the proceedings which the Commissioner of Police initiated against the culpable inactivity on the part of your constables at the Sealdah Outpost ? / I know that proceedings were drawn up against that man who was in charge there and he was examined. [...] But the subject-matter of the inquiry was your conduct and the con- duct of the Outpost police and the gentleman who conducted the inquiry was Mr. [...] This file will contain useful information about the activities of a certain class of people in that area during the five days of the riots, i. e. , from the 16th to the 20th.
