Memoirs of the Department of Agriculture in India. The Vitality of the Haemorrhagic Septicaemia Organism outside the body (Veterinary Series) April 1914

1914

From the experiments here recorded it may be assumed that although desiccation and exposure to the direct rays of the sun are rapidly fatal to the existence of the themorrhagic Septicaemia organism, yet when protected from direct sunlight and in certain conditions of heat and moisture the virus can maintain a sapro- phytic existence for a very long period. [...] During the rains, the mud in which the organism exists is washed over the pasture and the cattle of necessity ingest a large number of the bacilli with their grass and water. [...] None of the facts revealed by the experiments which have been carried out on the effect of the ingestion of Haemorrhagic Septicaemia material do in any way exclude the theory of inges- tion as the natural method of infection. [...] There are few recorded observations regarding the role of the biting flies in the transmission of the Haemorrhagic Septicaemia,118 VITALITY OF THE HAMORRHAGIC SEPTICAMIA ORGANISM In 1905, Drs. [...] Dammam' and Opermann noted the appearance of an outbreak of Wildseuche and Rinderseuche in the Province of Hanover connected with the presence of numerous Simntia Ornata.
