The spirit of nationalism stimulated by the war, the racial bitterness engendered by the Punjab disturbances, the bitter resentment of the Muhammadans over the delay in announcing terms of peace and their apprehension that they might prove unfavourable to Turkey which found vent in the Xhilafat movement, the disappoint- ment of the extreme section of politicians with the Reforms, and the economic [...] Indication of the growing strength of the extremist element in the movement was to be found in the change of the Congress creed which left the definition of the word Swaraj indefinite and omitted all references to the ,British connection. [...] At the'same time a constructive programine, -of which the main features were the enlistment of one crone of members of the Congress, the popularisation of the spinning wheel, the manufacture of khaddar, and the improvement of the social,. [...] The report of the Civil ,DiSobedienoe Committee which was submitted late in October she-Wed, that while there Was unanimity on the question of the unpreparedness of the country for mass civildisobedience and the desirability of entering the 104 bodies to facilitate the working of the constructive programme, there was a serious divergence of views on the question of entering the Councils for the pu [...] Evidencewas also: forthcothing of the inauguration of Asrams in various places on the model of the Asrams of the old revolutionary . days and of the close connection of the organisers of these with each other.
