The Oriental Seminary Annual Report 1942

1942

The fall of Burma and the fear of imminent attack of India caused marked setback in affairs of the Seminary. [...] The Government notifications declaring Calcutta as within Danger Zone and urging people, not wanted in the prosecution of the War, to evacuate Calcutta coupled with the panicky circular of the University, aggravated the situation and people in large numbers began to evacuate the city from the middle of December 1911 and the guardians removed their wards to safer places. [...] There was practically no new admission of pupils in both the departments. [ 5 The ten classes of the boys' Department which included 29 sections in 1911 with a roll strength of 888 boys were reduced to 9 sections consisting of a total number of 150 boys on an average from January to the 1st week of May when the school closed for the Summer vacation. [...] The fall in the number of students owing to panic told on the financial position of the Seminary. [...] The paucity of funds as also the absence of a large number of pupils necessitated the suspension of Distribution of Prizes in both departments as also the Annual Athletic Sports in the boys' Department.
