Department of Agriculture Madras. Annual Report of the Agricultural Station Samalkota for the Year 1925-26

1926

There was a good supply of water in the canal in the early part of the season and towards the end. [...] The abundant rainfall, however, contributed to the appearance of pests of both paddy and sugarcane, which, in the case of the latter crop, seriously interfered with the interpretation of experimental results. [...] In the same way, diff,:rences in the time of flowering of two strains of the same variety may, in one case, coincide with clear weather, and in the other with rain, whereby the setting of grain is impaired. [...] As already stated, the difference in the case of varieties such as Navakotisannam and Konamani that mature in M months is less, but although a reduction in the seed rate and single planting does not increase the yield to the same extent, there is a saving in seed and the cost of pulling and transport of seedlings from the seed-bed to the field. [...] Tho constant rain in August and towards the end of the year damaged the crop, and in the early part of the season the rate of growth was no.
