Department of Agriculture Madras. Annual Report of the Agricultural Station Samalkota for the Year 1928-29

1929

The rain received during the south- west monsoon was normal but the distribution was uneven, having been too heavy in the month of July and the second fortnight of September and too light in August and the first fortnight of September. [...] The heavy rain at the time of flowering interfered with the pollination of many of the varieties, the crop having lodged on many fields. [...] The planting of these plots earlier than during the previous years may therefore make the results more valuable in interpreting the effect of the season on the yield. [...] In the case of one of the dry ploughed plots, the operation was commenced soon after the harvest of the previous paddy crop, while in the case of the remainder it was done after the break of the south-west monsoon. [...] Application of sand. —For a number of years the average yield of grain on the station has been maintained at a fair standard and above that of the annual outturn in the district.
