Department of Agriculture Madras. Report of the Work of the Samalkota Agricultural Station for 1917-18

1918

The seed-beds that were raised with the help of this rain had a good start before the canal opened and the monsoon broke out in the early part of June. [...] Transplants with earlier sown seedlings were more satisfactory and this emphasises the necessity, which we have been advocating, of earlier sowing of seed-beds with the help of reservoirs, during the closure of canals, so that the seedlings are transplanted soon after the canal re-opens in June with a view to get good crops. [...] The results of this experiment during the four years it was in progress have been uniformly in favour of hot weather cultivation for dry crops and the conclusions are definite. [...] (b) Second crop--The chief problem in the Godavari delta is to determine how best to utilize the canal water running to waste in the two months-December and January-and to get the second crop paddies planted earlier so that they may not suffer in the last stages of their growth as is usually the case. [...] [Yields in pounds per acre. ] Time of planting experiments. —This experiment was started at the instance of the Collector of Kistna in 1914-15 to determine whether the time of planting paddy has any effect on the yield of the crop.
