The rainfall during the north-east monsoon was also below the average and the cyclone which broke on the coast during the last week of November did much damage to the sugarcane and plaintain crops. [...] In spite of the late monsoon the season was favourable for the main crop paddy but the water-suppply for the second crop at the beginning of the year was below normal. [...] To get over the difficulty of deal- ing with three grades, which, in the case of the light and heavy seed showed a difference in germination of 69 per cent the seed-rate8 TABLE 11. [...] 16. 80 20. 17 3,360 4,034 i 4,184 11,188 - -- -- Note. -Considerable damage was clone by rats in this series, the plots of some varieties having been more damaged then those of others; when the number of plants destroyed is eliminated and the yields are calculated on the number of plants left undamaged the following acre yields of grain were obtained for the 8 varieties respectively :- 445 ; 2,141; 2 [...] Owing to the failure of the water- supply in the canal only two out of the three series ripened off, and figures for these are noted in Table XII.
