Department of Agriculture Madras. Report of the Work of The Palur Agricultural Station For 1917-18

1918

The practically rainless period of April and May, coupled with the hot weather experienced during the three months preceding April stood in the way of giving the fallow cultivation usually given at this part of the year in a satisfactory manner. [...] The unfortunate shortage of rain in July suspended the growth of the dry land crops, while they were very young, and had it not been for the ploughing given by the monsoon plough in the preliminary cultivation, there would have been a miserable failure of the crops. [...] In this experiment there are two series of plots A' and B. ' In the A' series the experiment with a cereal interplanted with ground- nut in the same year is conducted, while in the B ' series the groudnut is grown in even years while the cereal in odd years. [...] This was for the purpose of bringing any korai which' was missed in the first working, as the action of the implement is to lay the grass in the direction in which the implement was working. [...] The following table shows the results of the varietal tests of the irrigated groundnuts. "-10 STATEMENT showing the yield of groundnut in pounds per acre in the varietal test, Irrigated.
