1926

District varieties. —In previous reports of the station a reference is made to the collection of varieties grown in the district for the purpose of studying their characteristics. [...] The uniformity in ripening may be explained on the grounds that either the manurial constituents in the series are . being distributed by irrigation or the crop in the case of heavy applications is unable to utilize a proportion of the nitrogen. [...] An examination of the yields in round figures of the outer and inner lines in the 1 ton series will show that the former has given a difference of about 10 per cent more cane, which does not suggest that there is loss in this series on account of irrigation. [...] A third of the cost of bone-meal applied to the previous paddy crop is added to the cost of manure. [...] This figure will of course vary according to the crop grown in the early season, the amount of manure applied and the time of cutting.
