The north- east monsoon was earlier and more evenly distributed than in the previous year, the rains lasting from the end of September to the end of November. [...] The success in raising sugarcane from seed is of great importance as it will now be possible, in the event of thick canes being bred at Coimbatore, to germinate seed and to study the seedlings in the district for which such breeding has been done The raising of seedlings during the year under report was a preli- minary step undertaken for the Government Sugarcane Expret with a view to transferring [...] The plot was irrigated from the northern to the southern side, and possibly on this account the southern pall of the field, owing to the wash of manurial constituents, showed superior growth to that on the northern half. [...] Taking the top and bottom halves of a sample of cane and calculating the ratio of total solids contained in the juice of each as an indication of ripeness, it will be seen that the figures in each' series approach unity. [...] The draught of the two mills, which was tested with a spring balance was in favour of the Chattanooga, the variation being from 1 to lf cwt.
