FOREWORD At the suggestion of a friend of mine I made a round of two or three selected quarters of Lahore in the winter of 1938-39 with the object of gaining some idea of the general economic and housing conditions of the poor sections of the population. [...] The late Mian Sir Fazl-i-Hussain when he was the Education Minister of the Punjab opened a large number of schools in various parts of the Province in order to bring education within reach of the masses but owing to the economic depression in the last decade coupled with their conservatism and ignorance the poorer people could not take full advantage of the educational facilities provided an [...] I. General.—Lahore the capital of the Punjab is one of the major towns of India and lies roughly in latitude 31° 33 feet N. and longitude 74° 16 feet E. At the time of the 1931 census the city (including the municipality and the catonment) had an area of. [...] Maharaja Ranjit Singh made Lahore the capital of his kingdom but the development and expansion of the modern town began with the advent of the British who retaied it as the capital of the Province and also made it the administrative headquarters both of the Lahore Division and District. [...] The regulation as a result of the application of which it is designed to widen the streets and roads of Lahore stands in the way of the construction of several new buildings as it requires house-builders to leave vacant some portion of the land in front of the houses.
