The accounts as they now stand represent most of the important agricultural tracts of the Punjab from Kangra in the north a Himalayan tract of high rainfall (74 inches) to Multan in the south-western dry area (rainfall 5 inches) and from the craggy Rawalpindi region in the north-west to the sandy Hissar and Rohtak in the south-east the latter being a region of prcarious rainfall and freque [...] The statement is in two parts ' the first showing the net produce which came to the farmer's house and the second the expenses which he incurred and which were paid in kind in the field from the common heap or on the threshing floor or at the time of making gur from sugarcane juice. [...] The allocation of the first is in the propotion of manual labour done on each area and that of the other three in the proporton of bullock labour put in BOOK I FARM ACCOUNTS Section I Summary and Discussion on the Financial Positions of the Holdings in 1938-39SECTION I SUMMARY AND DISCUSSION OF RESULTS 1. Introductoty During the year under review accounts were kept on 29 holdings in thirteen [...] In the Older Districts the largest areas held per worker and per yoke of oxen were in the South-Eastern Dry Tract and the lowest in the Mountainous and Sub-montane regions; as regards the areas croped the position was the same except that the Central Punjab showed the highest area per permanent worker (9.8 acres). [...] fIntensity of cropping4neans the total area of crops during the year (in the two harvests) as a percentage of the cultivated area of the holding.7 The Older Districts show a higher intensity for the irrigated area than the Canal Colonies or Risalewala; the Mountainotts as well as Sumontane tracts again lead in the intensity on both the irrigated and uirrigated areas.
