Department of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (India) Calcutta. Report for the year ending 23rd June 1938 by the Indian Trade Agent Kabul

1939

This period has been chosen in preference to the financial year as it marks the completion of the first year since the opening of the Agency and also enables the inclusion in the report of an account of the new trade laws promugated in Afghanistan. [...] The outstanding feature of the period under review is the fall of the Af ghani rupee and the efforts of the Afghan Government to stabilise it. [...] The crisis was due to the fall in prices of Karakul skins and the situation detriorated further on account of the boycott of Afghan fruit in India that followed in the wake of the establishment of fruit monopoly in Kabul. [...] The prmises of the Agency were chosen with particular care and it is located in the business centre of Kabul a stone's throw from the headquarters of the Shirkat and the Afghan National Bank. [...] In the meantime the working of the Agency has been brought to the notice of merchants in Kandahar and Jalalabad through the medium of His Brtannic Majesty's Consuls.
