In the seventies of the last century he occupied the professorial chair of economics at the London University which be gave up on being returned to Parliament. He held during his Parliamentary career resposible positions in the Home and the Colonial offices under the Liberal Ministry and later on became Financial Secretary to the Tresury which office he resigned in 1881; and afterwards bec [...] J. M. Macpherson 13ar-aLaw another Member of the Calcutta Bar from the office of the Secretary to the Legislative Department to the Government of India Mr. [...] On his retirement the Secretarship to the Legislative Council to the Goverment of Bengal was also taken away from the Bar and a Member of the Indian Civil Service was appointed to this office as well. [...] In the middle of the day when got three hours' leave he used to go and attend a local English School and followed the teaching in the lowest forms and the teachers coeld not help feeling: great sympathy for the desire to acquire knowledge on the part of their little visitor and allowed him to attend at their classes. [...] He was used as the brake-horse of the Bench Each new judicial colt was harnessed to him and he pulled the neophyte round dangerous corners forced him to trot instead of gallop in the straight and never knew he was slisping all the while the lives of future knights.
