The Hon'ble. the Chief Justice and the Hon'ble Judges of the Calcutta High Court held a reception in the Judges' Library on the day of the reopening of the Court after the. [...] The following is from the writing of an Englishman writing towards the end of the eighteenth century : " He (the spinner and weaver) fills up the hour of disapointment in the labours of agriculture for almost every artisan is a husbandman and knows how to put his hand to a plough in time of need." Under English rule the land became practically the only source of support of the people. [...] But the Mahomedans and the English left the trouble and unpleasantness of the collection of the rent directly from the actual tillers of the soil to their subjects under more or less close supervision. [...] During the Mahomedan period the Zemindars exercised most of the functions of the State subject of course to the supreme control of the ruler of the Province. [...] After the renewal of the Charter in 1793 the general body of the English merchants was clamouring for the abolition of the trade monopoly of the Company and concessions had to be made on every fresh demand.
