[...] The Hebrew law which allowed restitution of the debtors' property after seven years the Islam's prejudice against taking any kind of interest on any loan whatsoever the restrictions contained in the lawS of ancient Greeks and Romans against taking; exorbitant rate of interest the medieval canonical laws against usury and the widespread disabilities and limitations put upon the practice everywh [...] From 1726 till the passing of the amendment of the Regulation Act of 1781 all litigants coming within the jurisdiction of the Mayor's Courts of Madraa and Bombay or of the Calcutta Supreme Court were governed in the matter of interest by.the Statute of Anne and tho general rules of Elish Common Law. [...] thitt the object of the provision of this non-intervention policy in such matters was necessary because of the risk attending loans to such merchants by reason of the speculative nature of transaction the damages attending the maritime trade coupled with the ability of the merchants and traders to pay any rate of interest that may be agreed upon.
