This was due partly to the settling down of the country after the War partly to the decreased facilities for procuring strong drink partly to the operation of the Probation Act and greatly to the work of the society. [...] The prison authorities were trying to reform the prisoner but there was always the danger from his old acquaintances on the expiration of his sentence and it was here the the work of the society came in. [...] The charges thus levelled against the " Army of God and Holy Church " as the Barons of England proclaimed themselves fail to the ground when we look to the force of cicumstances that led them to swear upon the altar of St. [...] They did not forget the -welfare of the ;lotion as a whole when-they met the King at Runnmede—" the Council meadow "—where the King and the Earls had often met in solemn witan long before the Norman set his foot on the island. [...] The first coapter of our author in which he -gives parallel accounts of how this contrivance has been utilised for evolving the bulk of the Roman law from the Twelve Tables the bulk of the English law from the CommoLaw of England and almost the whole of Hindu law from the Vedas is an interesting study in comparative jurisprudence.
