As the novernor-General oaf India was once the Governor of Bengal so the Advocate-Genral of Bengal since the creation of that office has been the legal adviser to the Govertinient of India. [...] The reason of this is that formerly Calcutta was the capital city and the seat of the Government of India. [...] Even an eminent Counsel from England on coming out to India finds himseif at sea witin the intricacies of the customary laWS of the Hindus and the Mahomedans as also the rent and the revenue laws of th6 country and no less amongst the elabrate provisions of the civil and criminal law that have been codified in India. [...] As the British income-tax was the direct outcome of.the Napoleonic Wars so was the Indian tax precipitated by the increased preparedness against the Russian menace and the expenditure over the Burma War. [...] What is done is that no deductions are wade from the salaries of the employees and a Jump sum is paid by the firm to the authorities as the tax collected from the establishment the gain to the employers being that they can show a considerable amount as expense which might ward off detailed.
