If the announcement made by the Bengal €overnment on the 15th March last that they proposed to take immediately the first steps towards abolition of the permanent settlement be really carried into effect the current year will witness the most outstand— ing administrative event that could pos— sibly happen in the province. [...] A more instructive study if anyone can undertake it will be an examination of the possibilities with which the proposed change is fraught in respect of not only economic re—adjust— It was stated by the Revenue Minister that Government had accepted the policy of bringing the actual cultivator into direct relation with the Government by means of acquiring the interests of all rent—receivers and t [...] In respect of the rater of compensation the Government seems to contemplate some liberalisation of the scale favoured by the majority of the members of the Commission which was ten times the net profit. [...] During the discussion which followed the announcement by the Revenue Minister one member of the Assembly made a coplaint that the Government should have neglected to give effect at least to the inocent recommendations of the Commission about which there was no controversy."
