The Calcutta Weekly Notes Monday May 17 1943

1943

It is not mere provincial pride which induces us to say that the choice of Sir Asoka Roy the distinguished AdvocatGeneral of Bengal for the Law Membership of the Government of India has been a happy inspiration in every way. [...] That it continues the tradition that the AdvocatGeneralship of Bengal shall be the pillow for the Law Membership of the Viceroy’s Cabinet is the least part of the matter. [...] As we conceive it the Law Membership of the Government of India requires not so much a scholarly lawyer of the insipid type as a man with a personality and a correct legal vision one who can take a just and broad view of the legal or political problems and give a shape to things by the force of his intellect and character. [...] In order that the provisions of the rule should be applicable it is necessary that the right to relief should arise out of the same act or transaction or series of acts or transactions and this. [...] But this at least is necessary that the case should be such that it could be said that the Court in which the suit was instituted had local jurisdiction in the first instance to deal with the cotroversies arising between the Plaintiff and each of the Defendants.
