The Calcutta Weekly Notes is now in ita 47th volume and our correspondent’s refeence to our “ 39 volumes ” was perhaps caused by association of ideas with the 39th number of the present volume in which the increase of subscription was first announced and to which reference is made in an earlier part of the letter. [...] The Regulations relate to a period when to adopt Tagore's famous phrase the weighing scales of the trade' man were revealing themselves as the king's sceptre and the throes of that transformtion which convulsed not only the trademen but also the unhappy Provinces under their ambiguous rule would always provide fascinating study. [...] From the prime concern of providing for the collection of revenue. they gradually move and spread out to ebrace the larger purpose of legislating for the administration of the country as also the civil rights of the subjects. [...] They also hold the roots of the present rights to laned property and the beginnings of the prcedural laws.
