The Calcutta Weekly Notes August 25 1947

1947

On the occasion of Independence Day celebrations Sir Trevor Harries Chief Justice hoisted the Flag of the Dominion of India on the High Court building in Calcutta in the presence of the Judges members of the Bar and officers and staff on Friday the 15th of August 1947. [...] I watched that cloudless dawn and was reminded of the words of the proclamation of the heralds announcing in the streets of London the death of a British monarch. [...] The judiciary as the administrator of such law is the guardian of the constittion and custodian of the rights of citizens. [...] A constitution cannot succeed or flourish without the aid of the judiciary whose duty it will he to expound and define the 'provsions of the Constitution Act to interpret it in a liberal and enlightened spiritso as to accord with the spirit of the constittion and thus guide it in its proper channel for the development of the free institutions of the country. [...] It will be the onerous duty of this and future generations of lawyers to maintain the best traditions of the past and to uphold the ideals and principles of the constitution of the Indian Union and we have no doubt that the legal profession will acquit itself well.
