The Calcutta Weekly Notes September 1 1947

1947

The mantle of the Privy Council will be falling on our Supreme Court and it may be taken for granted that since the Supreme Court will have its seat inside the country and will from many points of view be more readily accessible the number of apeals it will have to entertain is sure to be heavy heavier certainly than what used to go overseas to the Privy Council. [...] The number of Judges therefore will need to be commensurate with the volume of work the Supreme Court will in all reason be expected to undertake. [...] For a long time the office of Law Member in the old-time Viceroy's Executive Council was looked upon as virtually a Calcutta monopoly; it was the result neither of accident nor of an unseemly partiality for our city if was only the recognition of Calcutta's pri`rriacy comparatively speaking in Matters of laws We do not make a grievance of Dr; Arnbed:- kar's appointment to the Indian Union Cabin [...] The High Court of 'Eastern'Pakistan will be situated fittingly in Dacca arid in the 'iposing mansion intended during the first partition of Bengal td be the residence of the Governor. [...] In a country where the climate is as trying during most of the year as ours the starched collar and the black coat and the gown to boot are quite a load in every sense of the term.
