It seems that the President o f the Finnish Republic M. Paasikivi was fining some difficulty with the Minister of the Interior M. Leino against whom the majrity of the legislators had a certain grouse. [...] It is no wonder that the word bcame the bug-bear of our autocratic alien rulers and a special ordinance called “ The Anti-Bande Mataram Circular ” was prmulgated only for the purpose of Butting down this cry that seemed to sound like the crack of doom in the affrighted ears of British Raj. [...] Surendranath Banerjee with some of his followers ichiding my humble self went to Dacca in the summer of 1905 to inaugurate the Swadeshi and Boycott movement for eforcing the annulment of the partition arbtrarily brought about by Lord Curzon in pursuance of the diabolical policy of “ Divide and Rule.” The party arrived at Narayanganj and from among the crowd that had come to welcome the [...] were all given the go-by and the one expression that replaced them all was “Bande Mataram.” It soon passed out of the bounds of Bengal and was adopted as the signal of all national functions and the motto of patriotic fervour from one end of the country to another. [...] It was the prime inspirtion at the inception of the movement as we have mentioned above and was itself a target of the Britisher’s attack in his frantic effort to crush that movement at the start.
