The just and strong manner in which not very long ago he and his Judges dealt with a number of political cases uholding the true liberties of the subject and keeping the executive in their proper place strengthened public confidence in the judciary and greatly enhanced the prestige of the Punjab High Court. [...] Jn the result the Judge passed the sentence of death which afterwards waif commuted by the executive to a life-sentence The accused then obtained special leave tx appeal to the Judicial Committee and tha main grounds taken on his behalf were the there was no jurisdiction in the trial Courl to try him without a jury and that there wal no evidence on which the conviction emit safely and justly be [...] The Judicial Co mittee did not uphold the contention that th accused was entitled to be tried by a jur and that the denial of that right had been gross disregard of the forms of justic That contention being rejected the onl point that remained was whether the a cused had been rightly convicted. [...] On tha point the general criticism that the Judith Committee made of the judgment was tha the Judge had not considered the alternati of manslaughter in disregard of the fa"lixvi TEE CALCUTTI WEEKLY NOTES [Vat. [...] The objection was allowed ex parte the dcree holder being absent on the date of hearing and the executing Court struck off the execution case and sent a certficate of satisfaction to the Court which pased the decree.
