[...] The deeper penetration of the roots in field 26 may be explained by tliie fact that the field was irrigated in the previous kharif followed by a shallow rooted crop (fodder juar) resulting in the depletion of moisture in the surface layer without affecting the deeper moist zones. [...] These kankar concretions are found at different depths in the sub-soil and are of lime type in loam and of lime and ferruginous type in the case of hard clay soils."9 As a result of the soil survey it has been found that though the texture of the surface soil does not vary much there are great variations in the texture of the sub-soil. [...] The results show that in the case of the light type of soils it varies between 26 and 35% while on that of the heavy soil between 32 and 46%. [...] The results of moisture estimation so far obtained indicate that :— (a) It is yet too early to say anything about the effect of implements used on the absorption and conservation of rain water."10 (b) Bajra crop for its moisture requirements depended on the first three feet column of the soil but about 90 to 95% of the total moisture taken up by the crop or evaporated was derived from the first
