Indian Central Jute Committee. Technological Research. Memoir No. 3. The Moisture Regain of Jute at a Range of Atmospheric Humidities

1941

S. G. Barker.(') The purpose of the experiments now to be described was to determine the equilibrium moisture regain attained by jute fibre in atmospheres of various humidities by conducting a series of experiments on a range of samples of jute of known origin and history. [...] The reason for the fairly marked differences between Set I and Set II may be that the former was freely exposed for some weeks to light and air before testing being exhibited in the Library of the Technological Research Laboratories for the benefit of visitors along with a comprehensive range collected by the SeniorFig. [...] In the example given and in similar cases (which form the great majority) the mean of the last two weighings is taken as the final weight. [...] There is reason to believe that the presence of adherent tissues apprciably affects the regain results and since the two qualities of tossa jute included in this set are not top marks and showed a fair amount of adherent tissue it is possible that this fact as much as the difference in species was the cause of the higher results. [...] The results obtained for the tossa jute in these tests varied more widely about the mean than did the results for the white jute.
