The total number of factories is 362 and that of bhattas in the factories nearly 5 000. [...] The important centre of the shellac industry is the Jhalda sub-division of the Manbhum district but the industry nourishes in various other places in the districts of Ranchi Palamau the Santhal Parghanas Gaya and Singhbhum. [...] The deduction is shared between the karigar the belwaya and the pherwaya in the ratio of 3 :2 :1 At Jhalda the wages of melters are lower.
