The conditions of work were ameliorated by better ventilation and the provision of riding facilities and the introduction of measures calculated to secure the personal safety of the employed. [...] Reports of inspection of Government magazines in charge of Civil Officers received in the Chief Inspector's Office were scrutinised and the irregularities or defects requiring remedy were brought to the notice of the Officers concerned': The nundler of inspections of explosives premises by the Magistracy and the Police wets 320 as compared with 382 during 1926. [...] Two sets of statements for gold and silver are prepared (1) in the order of Mines that are and were in exist ence and (2) in the order of calendar years—vide Appendix 111.--Statement showing the amount of Royalty payable to Government the amount paid and the balance still due for the year 1927. [...] The equipment of Heathcote Shaft--the erection of the winding plant and converter set at the 40th level referred to in last year's report—was completed during the year and the shaft put in commission from the 40th level down to the 66th level. [...] Prior to the introdtiction of this more rigid type of support it was thought advisable on certain considerations to reduce the distance between the levels from 100 feet to 75 feet as stated in the last year's report but in view of the success of the experiment the usual distance of 100 feet between levels will be maintained below the 70th level.
