Cones quently the average strength of all the sapwood in a tree is somewhat less than the average strength of all the heartwood but the minimum strength found in the heartwood is below the minimum strength found in the sapwood. [...] The conclusion from all these observations is that the strength of the wood in any particular part of the cross section of the stem is a function of its distance from the heart or pith quite irrespective of whether or not the wood at that distance in the tree happens to be heartwood or sawood. [...] Secretary.—After the meeting held between the Eastern Group and the suppliers at Calcutta in January last year the minutes of the meeting were sent to the Railway Board and then the orders referred to concerning the year contract and the prices to be paid were issued by the Board. The meeting is usually held on the Friday of the week in which the Engineering Section of the Indian Railway Conference Association takes place If we know the date fixed for the next meeting of the Engineering Section of the Indian Railway Conference Association we will then be able to fix our date.
