The nineteenth century saw the standard of living in the West rise from two to five times ; it witnessed the disappearance of the remnants of feudalism and serfdom the growth of demcratic freedom in large parts of Europe an unprecedented multiplication of scientific and technological inventions a brilliant epansion of natural knowledge and spread of literacy among the masses.
