Prabuddha Bharata or Awakened India September 1932

1932

It is a common experience that democracy in reality is not the rule of the people but only a false garb for the rule of the few who may or may not look to the interest of the nation as a whole. [...] There have been many theories in every field of action as to how to better the condtion of the world but why is it that the world is Ctill as it were in a retrgrade.condition ? It is because the theories were offered not really for the betterment of the world but for the justification of the actions of the authors themselves. [...] But whatever might have been the law in the early stages of the evolution of life on earth the human society is fundamentally based on selsacrifice rather th—i on gross self-iterest ; on the spirit of man's readiness to protect his weaker brethren rather than on the application of the theory of the survival of the fittest. [...] The sacrifice of the mother makes the life of the child possible on earth ; self-sacrifice of the head of a family is responsible for the peace among its different members. [...] And that is possible only by the influence of the life of the best and the noblest in the society.
