[...] Majumdar had to depend on the facsimile of the inscription (which is hopelessly indistinct) published by Rajaguru as the original"372 TIRLINGI COPPER-PLATE [ J. B. R. S. becomes the earliest known record in the Ganga era though it is difficult to ascertain the name of the donor' of the grant in the present state of our knowledge. [...] In the month of August of this year Shah Alam II the unfortunate and shadowy Emperor of Delhi made a grant of the Diwani of Bengal Bihar and Orissa to the English East India Company. [...] Shah Alam's firman of the 12th August 1765 granting the Diwani stated : that whereas in consideration of the attacment and services of the high and mighty the noblest of exalted noblest the chief of illustrious warriors our faithful servants and sincere wellwishers worthy of our royal favours the English Company we have granted them the Diwani of the provinces of Bengal Bihar and Oriss [...] we have granted to them whatever may remain out of the revenues of the said Provinces after remitting the sum of twentysix lacs of Rupees to the Sarkar and providing for the expenses of the Nizamat.
